Round 69 - Hey Watch This Movie the Disney + Edition

 This week the girls take aim at Hey Watch This Movie the Disney + Edition... 

Last year we had this great idea for a topic where we would each pick a movie for one of our other co-hosts (which they have not seen) and make them watch it. In 2022 we decided to do another round of this game but this time we focused on movies available on Disney +.

Amy was very scared this week because Sarah was in charge of picking a movie for her to watch. However, Amy was in luck when Sarah told her to watch Darby O'Gill and the Little People. 

The movie was released in 1959 and is about a groundskeeper named Darby and his encounters with the local leprechauns, mainly King Brian. 

Amy actually enjoyed this movie much to her surprise! Much of that had to do with a young Sean Connery being cast in this movie. 

*correction - Amy said it wasn't a Disney movie when it was made and was later acquired by Disney. This picture proves she was very wrong about that!

Sarah was assigned to watch Down Periscope by Bianca. The movie stars Kelsey Grammer as Luitenant Commander Tom Dodge as well as some very recognisable actors from the 90s.

This movie was released in 1996 and as Sarah noted was "sufficiently funny". Amy and Bianca have both seen this movie many times and the three of them discussed their favourite parts of the movie. 

Bianca finished us off by discussing the movie she was tasked to watch being Alien vs Predator. This movie was released in 2004 and it came as quite a shock to Sarah and Amy that Bianca had not seen this movie despite seeing both the Aliens and the Predator movies.

Bianca thoroughly enjoyed this movie and entertained us with an insight into her thoughts while watching the movie. It was literally Bianca reading her thought pattern while watching the movie.

Round 60 - Movie music

This week the girls take aim at Movie Music... 

This week we decided to combine two of our favourite topics being music and movies. In full disclosure, Bianca came up with this topic but didn't give us a lot in terms of parameters for the topic, however, we could all agree that music in movies has the power to take us back to the movie it's from and is essential for a good movie.

Amy kicked us off tonight explaining that despite combining our two favourite topics we all ran in different directions on this one. Amy then discussed the role music plays in setting the scene in a movie and can be used to intensify, dramatise or even bring a sense of relief to parts of a movie.

Amy then went on to discuss one of her favourite film franchises, James Bond and the role music has had since the first James Bond movie was released in 1962. 

The first James film, Dr No, opened with theme music which is now played all over the world. After the first film, a theme song sung by a well-known music artist of the time was also played in the opening credits of the film with the James Bond theme.

After listening to James Bond songs whilst researching this topic she did discover some of her favourite James Bond songs came from films within the franchise that she didn't love.

Amy concluded her segment by saying that her favourite James Bond theme song is Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey, and she absolutely loved this movie. 

Bianca went with her concept which was songs that transport you to a movie when you hear them. This would have been super helpful for the other two bitches, if she had actually outlined the brief...

Round 54 - Better than the original

This week the girls take aim at things that are better than the original... 

This week we are taking aim at the world of remakes. Movies, music, TV are all formats that have seen a multitude of remakes. Every now and then you stumble across a remake that is better than the original and tonight we are taking aim at a few....

Amy introduced this week's topic by running through a brief history of remade music and movies. Amy then discussed some fun facts about the most remade movies and some epic flops of remade movies. 

For something different and because she had to leave midway through recording the episode we let Sarah go first this week. 

Sarah chose a couple of songs that she preferred the remake of instead of the originals. These songs included:

Respect by Aretha Franklin 

Nothing Compares 2U By Sinead O'Conner

Killing Me Softly by The Fugees; and 

The Sound Of Silence By Disturbed 

If you like any of these songs please let us know or if you haven't listened to them, give them a listen. Sarah finished her part off with a movie. Sarah declared her love for the movie Titanic made in 1997 and stated in her opinion that this remake was better than the original and other adaptations of the story. Sarah mainly credits the success of this remake to Leonardo Di Caprio. Face it, you cannot beat Di Caprio.     

Amy jumped back in at this point in the show to discuss a movie that she believed was better than the original. Amy's pick was the Stepford wives. The original was made in 1975 then remade in 2004. 

Amy liked the remake better because she thought that the point the movie was trying to make about equality between the genders was better made in the remake. However, Amy accepts that many people (including Bianca) completely disagree with her and she doesn't care.

Bianca discussed the finer points between the Freaky Friday movies starting way back in the 70s, then to the first remake in the 90s. Coming in next is the 2000s version and bringing up the rear is the 2018 crapulence.

Bianca definitely had a hard time choosing between the 90s and 2000s versions but decided the 90s was her fav and the best remake.

Round 53 - Stockholm Syndrome

This week the girls take aim at Stockholm Syndrome... 

Here at Friday Night Wine Fight, we love a good syndrome. We like it better when there are some really good tales to be told about people with certain syndromes. Tonight we take aim at a one called Stockholm Syndrome.

Sarah opens this week's topic with a bit of background on what Stockholm Syndrome is. The girls were shocked to learn that it is not recognised by some medical practitioners as an actual condition.   

Sarah then shares the heartbreaking tale of Colleen Stan. Colleen Stan developed Stockholm Syndrome after being locked in a box for over three years by her captors. Collen's determination to survive was incredible to hear and we can only imagine what this poor woman went through during her ordeal.

Amy was excited to take aim at this week's topic and decided to dive into the story of Patricia Hearst. Patricia was kidnapped from her home by a local radicalist group. During her time with the group, she decided to take up arms and fight with her captors for their cause. 

Later after the group was arrested by Police Patricia claimed that she was brain-washed and in fear for her life at the hands of the group. Sadly for Patricia, her pleas did not go down well in court and she was sentenced as a member of the group despite being kidnapped by them. Patricia however did receive a pardon for her part in the crimes police allege she committed of her own free will in 2001.

Bianca finishes us off this week by recounting the tragic tale of Mary McElroy. Young Mary was kidnapped whilst taking a bath in her father's home in 1933. Mary was 25 at the time of the incident.  

Despite her kidnappers demanding $60,000 for her release, Mary's Kansas City Mayor Father haggled the kidnappers down to $30,000. 

The kidnappers were eventually caught however they gained a supporter in young Mary and she visited them in prison. Unfortunately, Mary was so racked with guilt over the incident she took her own life and in her suicide note begged for her captors to be spared the death sentence they received for her kidnapping.

Round 49 - Best action movie scene

This week the girls take aim at the best action movie scene... 

Action movies, what's not to love? As far as we are concerned action movies are a great genre of movie and we thought we would share with our listeners our favourite action movie scenes...

Bianca started with some psych about why we like action movies and we went on a tangent about horror movies! Sorry not sorry.

Then she finished with a countdown of the top ten most expensive movie scenes of all time. Which turned dark for a bit there. Actually sorry for that one.

Then Bianca showcased her favourite action scene; the battle of helms deep from Lord of the Rings the two towers.

We are pretty sure every name was mispronounced and would trigger a true LOTR fan. Whoopsie.

Amy got to be the meat in the sandwich this week and was very excited about this week's topic because she loves action movies! 

Although there are so many epic action movie scenes out there Amy decided to talk about the final showdown scene in the 1996 movie called The Long Kiss Goodnight. 

The movie stars Geena Davis and Samuel L Jackson and the scene in question features the word motherf**er, BUT Samuel L Jackson doesn't say it! Spoiler alert - it's Geena Davis!

Sarah ends the show with the spectacular church scene from the kingsman and although it may be a little violent it was one of the best action movie scenes that she has seen in a long time. 

This movie stars Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Samuel L Jackson, and many more. It was directed and produced by Matthew Vaughn and the scene was choreographed by Guillermo Grispo.

Round 34 - Underrated Movies

This week the girls take aim at underrated movies... 

For every movie's success and failure, there is a movie that goes under the radar. Some people's underrated movies are polarising so have a listen to which three movies the girls decided should have the title of underrated classic.....

Sarah opens with the night's topic of Underrated Movies which are movies that you may love but others just don't feel the same. She then moved onto on of her favorite movies, Meet the Robinsons. It's a beautifully done Disney movie that didn't get the recognition it deserved.

Amy's movie choice tonight was the epic slightly comic book-esk tale of Scott Pilgrim vs the world.

To say this movie tanked at the box office would be an understatement. However, it has since gained a cult following and has even racked up a few awards. In summary, this movie is about a 20 something guy who has decided to pursue a new romantic interest (even though he has a girlfriend at the time) and finds out he has to defeat her 7 evil ex's in order to date her. 

The movie also has a musical undertone as our hero, Scott Pilgrim, plays in a fairly average garage band.

If you have not seen this movie do it now!

Bianca's movie tonight is The Adventures of Ford Fairlane Rock and Roll Detective.

Here's a brief synopsis as this movie is too good to give too much away. Like seriously fuck all the haters on every review site ever.

To the Los Angeles elite, Ford Fairlane is known as "Mr. Rock 'n' Roll Detective." This loudmouthed ladies' man serves an exclusive rock star clientele, who depend on his keen eye and smug discretion. So when a heavy-metal musician dies mid-concert, Fairlane is on the case before the lights come up. But things turn shocking when radio personality Johnny Crunch hires Fairlane to find a missing groupie mere hours before he is electrocuted live on air.
