Welcome to the first post for Friday Night Wine Fights A&B edition!
For our inaugural episode, we take aim at... Current Events.
But first, what were we drinking?
Amy was drinking R Paulazzo Rose
Bianca was drinking Cape Schank Pinot Noir
Available from T'Gallant
Bianca started off with a fun story involving the Catholic church. Yea, we know if someone opened by saying "fun catholic story" we'd be in disbelief too.
This story takes place in Phoenix Arizona USA.
For 25 years Rev. Andres Arango poured the holy water and said all the words during the baptisms he performed, Father Arango would say, "We baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."
But Father Arango misstated one word: "We baptize" should have been "I baptize." And getting that word wrong nullified all of the rituals he performed using that language.
Rendering the rite invalid for thousands of people, Meaning they all are not catholic and can't get into heaven, according to Bishop Thomas Olmsted of the Diocese of Phoenix.
BUT, this gets better… the Diocese found after further investigation. The baptism performed on Father Arango when he was a child was also invalid because the rev at the time used the words “we” instead of “i”.
There are so many people out there in the US of A who are wandering around thinking they are Catholic and they’re not.
Hilarious.
Amy then discussed the ever-evolving situation with Russia and Ukraine. Going into their history with Crimea (Bianca, threw in a fun tidbit about that history) and why we should give a shit about what is going on.
Why should we care about it?
Because with war comes a large death and injury number. The toll war takes on those affected is a lot. Put simply we should actively give a shit about the suffering of others. This should not be a revelation to people seriously.
Because propaganda is still such an issue. What we hear in Australia is different from what the Russians are told. How does this happen? In the age of the internet and cameras on phones etc, the information we consume is still filtered and controlled by others. The ability to control the narrative is key in convincing people to follow you.
Because History tells us that power-hungry dictators don’t just stop. The potential for Putin to be the next Hilter is concerning, to say the least.
History also tells us that when the whole world is watching this go down other power-hungry leaders spark up. While all eyes are on the Ukraine, countries who have been on the border of ordering their own invasions might just decide “they can’t stop all of us”. This is how world war 2 happened.
Because anyone with nuclear weapons is fucking scary.
To lighten the mood... Amy then went into Eurovision
Ok so for those who have no idea what Eurovision is all about read on... The contest was first held on the 24th of May in 1956 and was based on Italy's Sanremo Music Festival. Originally it was designed to test the limits of live TV technology.
In the first competition, 7 nations participated and participants sang a popular song from the radio with a live band.
In 2022 there are 40 countries participating with Australia included.
This year Australia will be represented by a singer by the name of Sheldon Riley singing an original song titled; We are not the same, which he co-wrote.
We listened to it and thought Riley’s voice was really good and the song powerful.
Riley was selected to represent in Australia after, of course, we decided to make a bit of a spectacle of the selection process hosting a contest of our own to decide the winner titled; Eurovision - Australia decides.
After this Bianca & Amy threw out there some events that they had missed or dismissed... like who knew Bill Paxton died? (not us)
To round out the episode Amy asked "Kanye, are you ok?" and broke down the situation going on there.
