Round 8 - WTF Darwin?!

This week the girls took aim at Evolution...

Let's be honest, the world and its inhabitants can be just plain weird. This week the girls discuss a topic that has been discussed frequently between them which they have eloquently titled "What the f**k Darwin?"

But first, what were we drinking?

Bianca was drinking Tred Softly* Pinot Grigio.

Available from BWS
*For every 12 bottles sold they plant a native Australian tree; LINK

Sarah was drinking Brown Brothers Moscato & Sav

Available from Dan Murphys

Amy was drinking Boy meets girl Pinot Grigio

Available from Naked Wines

Amy opened with a discussion about what our topic for tonight means. Put simply there is a lot of crazy stuff in "the nature" and if anyone could explain it, it would be famous scientist Charles Darwin.

Amy then continued straight into discussing the humble Platypus. Is it a possum? Is it a duck? Is it an otter? You decide!

Sarah had a bit of a chat about the Creatonotos Gangis Moth,
this thing is the stuff of nightmares.

Then She talks a little more in-depth about the Cassowary,  a bird that doesn't look like it evolved since the age of the Dinosaurs.

(Cassowary foot, not a Dinosaurs)

Bianca closed out by discussing the theory of devolution (de-evolution) most notably the hagfish (terrifying monster of the sea) which as we discovered, this creature has ancestors going back 300 million years.

Round 7 - Weird Syndromes

This week the girls took aim at Weird Syndromes...

This week the girls look at what is a syndrome and some of the weirder syndromes out there.

But first, what were we drinking?

Bianca was drinking Brown Brothers Cienna:

Available from BWS

Sarah was drinking: Innocent bystander's pink Moscato

Available from Dan Murphys

Amy was drinking Jen Pfeiffer's sav blanc

Available from Naked Wines

Amy opened by discussing what a syndrome is, how they get their names, and how many there are out there.

Amy also discussed Cotard's Syndrome also known as the walking dead syndrome.

Sarah fills the middle by talking about the Jumping Frenchmen of Maine, a syndrome named after a group of lumberjacks in Maine.

Bianca closed out the show with Capgras (KAP-Graph) Syndrome, this syndrome can afflict anyone and we collectively agreed would be terrifying.

We heard the story of Mrs. D. and how she was affected. Then we had some fun with a script from the movie JFK.

Lawyer: Isn’t it true that you routinely fingerprint your daughter when she leaves for college?

Witness: Yes.

Lawyer: And isn’t it also true that you fingerprint her again upon her return from college?

Witness: Yes, I do.

Lawyer: Why do you do that?

Witness: Because I want to make sure that the daughter I get back is the same daughter that I sent off to college.

You'll have to listen to the episode to find out how that went!

Round 6 - My Favourite Superhero

This week the girls took aim at Superheroes...

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Is it some poorly thought out wardrobe choices? Spoiler alert! it's all of the above. The girls chat about their favourite Superhero and some lesser-known homegrown "heroes".

But first, what were we drinking?

Bianca was drinking Tanqueray Gin and Lemonade:

Available from Dan Murphys

Sarah was drinking Banrock Station pink Moscato:

Available from Dan Murphys

Amy was drinking Liz Richardson Pinot Grigio

Available from Naked Wines

Bianca opened by discussing three real-life superheroes from Australia...

The first is The Black Rat of Sydney - This superhero is a martial arts expert and wears a rat mask and knife proof black fabric outfit, but this is mostly for PR work.
Black Rat of Sydney

Next, we have Captain Australia (or as Sarah calls him, At Man) - This vigilante is based in Brisbane. He wears a green and gold suit and a mask similar to Captain America with an @ symbol on his chest and a Batman-style utility belt holding a torch, mobile phone and video camera.
Most weekends, the middle-aged father of two regularly patrols Fortitude Valley's seedier streets.
Captain Australia told the Courier Mail in an interview "being a hero isn't as glamorous as you might think''.

"There's no brooding on the edge of a skyscraper overlooking the city".

Lastly from our home city of Melbourne, we have the Fauna Fighters. This duo formed in 2012 their personas are the Flying Fox and Thylacine. They dress in what can only be described as super tight latex. Flying foxes' colours are black and red and Thylacine is black and yellow with a silver chest piece. They have no visible weapons or utility belts.

They raise awareness for animal rights, actively assisting various organizations in protests and petition drives.

With this hilarity out the way...

Bianca then launched into her favourite superhero, The Phantom.

We discovered The Phantom is the world's first superhero, a gentleman, a badass, and Bianca's first crush.

We also discovered Lee Falk the Phantom creator is the world champion at passive aggression (we all salute you, Mr Falk!).
This is a random comic from Bianca's collection

Sarah talks about one of the most underrated superheroes out there; Aquaman. He first appeared in the 1940s and as everybody knows he can communicate with fish but that's not the thing he can do, he also has a quiet family life.

Amy, wearing her lasso of truth had no choice but to talk about her favourite superhero. Created in the 1940s and still an icon for many different groups is Amy's pick this week - Wonder Woman.

Known for her incredible superhero abilities, her prominent position in the Justice League and some fairly interesting outfits over the years, Wonder Woman is a favourite of many since her inception into the realms of the comic book world.

Amy is a bit of a simple human, so she didn't stray too far into what she calls the "nerd zone" but did provide listeners with the basic origins of Wonder Woman as well as a description of her powers and gadgets.

Round 5 - Aliens

This week the girls took aim at Aliens!

Aliens, a topic that both unites and divides people. Are they real? Why as humans are we so obsessed about the possibility of their existence? The girls chat about conspiracies, occurrences, and the fun folks who create religions around Aliens!

But first, what were we drinking?

Bianca was drinking Bullers Muscat:

Available from Dan Murphys

Sarah was drinking Banrock Station pink Moscato:

Available from Dan Murphys

Amy was drinking Wiley Rooster Rose:

Available from Naked Wines

Bianca opened with the well-known event Storm Area 51 - they can’t stop all of us. We discussed how the creator has fewer scruples than us and that's saying something.

Then Bianca led into a brief history of Area 51 - Way too much to unpack in a short amount of time (stay tuned for future episodes).

And her segment was finished off with delving into the mysterious Solar Warden.

SOLAR WARDEN SYMBOL*

*Remember if you see this symbol to get out and fast! but it might already be too late.

"I still maintain this is a cool tattoo idea" - B

Sarah tells the story of Barney and Betty Hill, who had the first widely reported abduction story in America.

Amy had a look at the fun folks who worship Aliens and have formed religions based on their existence. There are some fascinating groups out there if you dare to search Alien Religions online.  Are they crazy? Or is it that, "Alien phenomena" has not been around long enough to be considered credible?
