Round 72 - Fact or Crap

This week the girls take aim at Fact or Crap...

This week is a little different. We decided we would test our mental strengths in playing the game Fact or Crap. This episode is in the format of a quiz show that got quickly out of hand thanks to the scoring method adopted (and disputed).

But first, what were we drinking?

Amy was drinking Hickinbotham of Dromana Tempranillo

Available from Hickinbotham Winery

Sarah was drinking nothing because the fun police got her

Bianca was drinking Brian Fletcher Shiraz

Available from Naked wines

Amy introduced tonight's game being Fact or Crap. The rules are simple, one co-host makes a statement and the other co-hosts guess if it's fact or crap.

The intention was not to keep score but of course, Bianca did anyway. After two rounds we realised we had a few extra questions and decided to keep the good times rolling.

However, this quickly turned into shenanigans when Bianca decided to take herself out of the running for the winning position and decided to play quizmaster instead.

With Sarah quite a few points behind Amy, Bianca devised a scoring system which would lead one triumphant and the other....... well let's say disappointed with the result.

*Spoiler alert - here is Bianca's scorecard

No one, including Bianca herself, knows why the scorecard contains O's or a K. Sometimes it's best not to question these things.

Enjoy the show!

Round 71- OMG I'm so dumb

This week the girls take aim at OMG! I'm So Dumb

The girl at Friday Night Wine Fight came to terms with all the dumb things they have said and done over the years and not just while recording the episodes for this podcast, and tonight girls are going to share some of their stories.

But first, what were we drinking?

Sarah wasn't drinking because she is being watched by the fun police

Amy was drinking Left Hook First Round Rose

Available from Naked wines

Bianca was drinking Brian Fletcher Shiraz

Available from Naked wines

Sarah jumps straight into the night's topic by asking for help from her co-hosts as she was having an I'm so dumb moment and couldn't think of a single specific story to demonstrate how dumb she often is. Thanks to Amy And Bianca who teamed up and remembered plenty of stories.

Amy after helping Sarah remember how dumb she is tells the story of the time she got her first tattoo and drove over to her parent's place to show them. You won't believe the answer she gave to her father's question. A perfect example of Amy's intellectual prowess. Amy was reminded of another time that fitted with night's topic, a time when Sarah popped her bubble quite spectacularly.

Bianca ends the topic with a story of the time when she was the "Penny" of her own nerdy "Big Bang" type group. During a conversation, she learned that you can only see one side of the moon - not both as she originally thought.  This was a major "mind blown" moment for her.

Happy Valentines Day to all our listeners!
We are not doing a specific Valentine's Day episode this year, however, we had a quick chat about the upcoming holiday and Bianca told us about an interesting concept she stumbled across online.

Round 65 - Not so Christmas Movies

This week the girls take aim at Not so Christmas Movies...

There is heated debate as to what makes a movie a Christmas movie. Some believe that Christmas must be a focal point of the film. Others believe if there is anything Christmas-y in the movie it makes it a Christmas movie. Tonight the girls discuss movies often played around the festive season but are not actually considered Christmas movies.

But first, what were we drinking?

Sarah was drinking nothing because the fun police got her

Amy was drinking La Provincia Rosé

Available from Naked wines

Bianca was drinking Baileys

Available from just about every bottle-o

Sarah opens this holiday bonbon with the fun fact that not all movies set at Christmas are Christmas movies. We know, it came as a shock to us too.

These movies are known as Christmas adjacent movies or not so Christmas, Christmas movies. These types of movies may be set around Christmas but really don't rely on Christmas as a part of the plot. They could be set at any time of the year. Examples of such movies are:
Die-hard
The Long Kiss good night
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
and more.

The Movie Sarah chose to talk about is one that she never really saw as a Christmas movie growing up, but now can relate to it more after having a child.

Gremlins is a gem of a movie that came out in 1984 and has been entertaining families ever since with it's cute main character Gizmo and devilishly funny but kind of creepy gremlins. It more of a Halloween movie than a Christmas movie.

Gremlins aka Bianca and Sarah's movie night

Amy's Night Out

Amy is, as always, very opinionated about this topic. Given she doesn't like your typical Hallmark Christmas movies she is always in search of something else to watch during the holiday season. Basically, if it has anything to do with Christmas, it's a Christmas movie in Amy's not so humble opinion.

Amy decided to discuss a movie that always gets a run at her house around the holidays. Lethal Weapon was released in 1987 and is set around the holiday season with many scenes of the movie featuring Christmas elements.

In researching this topic, Amy discovered that it is no coincidence that two of her favourite Christmas action movies, Die Hard and Lethal Weapon, were set during the holiday season on purpose. Was it pivotal to the plot? No. Could the movies be set at any other time of the year without changing much to the movie? Absolutely.

However, the writer of Die Hard the movie, Steven De Souza explained in an interview that the producer of both movies, Joel Silver, liked movies set at Christmas so they would be played on TV around the holidays.

There you have it! People want an alternative to your traditional Christmas movies so some action movies are set during the festive season to give people something else to watch.

Christmas lights in the background make it a Christmas movie

Bianca Listen, Die Hard is a great film, but saying it’s a great Christmas film is, at this point, well-worn territory. If you’re looking for an actual holiday-movie alternative to watch in December — something that takes place during the holidays, but isn’t It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, A Christmas Story, or one of the 97 versions of A Christmas Carol  — there are many other Christmas-adjacent movies out there.

Movies that have that hint of Christmas, without all of the usual Christmas trappings and lessons. Movies that take place during the holiday season, and may feature brightly lit trees and snow — and maybe even a Christmas carol or two — but aren’t about learning the real meaning of the holiday or taking over for Santa because he’s injured.

And here's Bianca, thank you to www.vulture.com for writing the segment for her...

L.A. Confidential (1997)

Titanic is an undeniably great movie, but there’s an argument to be made that L.A. Confidential should have won the Best Picture, Oscar, that year. This terrific drama, based on the novel by James Ellroy, delves into police corruption and cover-ups in the LAPD of the early 1950s. It actually begins on Christmas Eve, with a violent police-station brawl, as several cops, juiced up on massively spiked eggnog, beat several Hispanic and black suspects in their cells. The headline splashed across the newspaper the next morning is “Bloody Christmas” (which happens to be the title of another movie that isn’t on this list). This leads us to the main plot: Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe, and Kevin Spacey work to figure out who killed several people at a diner, including Crowe’s partner, who was involved in the Christmas Eve scandal.

This all sounds dark and serious, and it is, but having the movie set at Christmas works as something of a mental balm, demonstrating that there are some good and nice things in this world, even if it is filled with dirty things and bad people. Appropriately, the soundtrack features “The Christmas Blues” by Dean Martin, one of the great “sad” Christmas songs that should be a lot more popular than it is.

Round 59 - Life Hacks

This week the girls take aim at Life Hacks...

Hacks, tips, tricks, or seemingly obvious solutions to daily problems have taken our world by storm! Tonight we take a look at some which we love and some we have discovered don't work as planned.

But first, what were we drinking?

Sarah was drinking Aqua By Jug

Available from All Good Taps

Amy was drinking Lazy Sunday Pinot Gris

Available from Naked wines

Bianca was drinking Boy meets girl savvy B Semillon

Available from Naked wines

Sarah starts us off with what life hacks are and a couple of ways they can help us. However, she thought before we go into some helpful hacks, you should hear about some not so helpful ones such as a wooden spoon on top of a pot to stop it from boiling over, using old sauce bottles for pancake mix, and why you shouldn't use a toaster to make grilled cheese sandwiches.

Bianca followed on with some life hacks that actually work!

Stop a pot from boiling over - when your pot of whatever is boiling over drop an ice cube into it and it will almost instantly calm its shit.

Self defense hack - have a baseball bat for defense, BUT not only is that useful, if you put a sock on it. If your assailant tries to grab the bat when you go to hit them, they will grab the sock, it will slide off the bat and you can swing back for a second go. BOOM life saved.

Masking the smell of a dead body, I mean dead animal… you don't have to bury the animal very deep all you need is some ashes like campfire ashes pour that over the body I mean animal carcass and the charcoal in the ashes neutralizes the smell.

BEST onion life hack… So according to science magic the vapor emitted from an onion when you chop it is attracted to moisture and will head to the closest moist area, it can find. This means your eyes. To combat this wet some paper towels place that on the chopping board next to the onion you are chopping and wallah! No more tears!

Amy loves a good hack. She has even been referred to as a walking hack (pun intended). However many hacks Amy has come up with herself are dangerous or stupid and most definitely should not be repeated by anyone.

So Amy decided to share a cleaning hack which she discovered more recently. It turns out humble white chalky toothpaste has a number of uses. It can be used to keep your bathroom mirror defogged, clean stains off white shoes, polish anything metal, clean your hands after handling something particularly stinky, and even patch small holes in walls.

Amy did discover that the power of cleaning with toothpaste can only go so far. It will not clean cracked porcelain or remove dishwasher marks from your plates or bowls.

Amy then threw in a bonus hack about how she cleans her dishwasher.

Round 56 - Roadside Attractions

This week the girls take aim at Roadside Attractions...

What is our fascination with roadside attractions? Is it the boredom on long road trips that makes look at something on the side of the road and say "ok we are stopping here"? We don't know. Join us on our journey to some roadside attractions we can't wait to get out and see.

But first, what were we drinking?

Sarah was drinking West Coast Coolers
Available from Dan Murphy's

Amy was drinking Lazy Sunday Pinot Gris

Available from Naked wines

Bianca was drinking Baileys

Available from Liquorland

Sarah kicks us off explaining just what a roadside attraction is and why we love them. She also tells the tales of two roadside attractions.

The first one she talks about is the Angel of the North which is a giant statue of an Angel on top of a hill in England.

The second one was the world's largest Cuckoo Clock in Germany and although we may still be a little confused about its size and dimensions we can all agree that it's super cute.

Amy wasn't sure what to cover this week since she loves a good roadside attraction. In the end, she settled on giant things from around Australia.

Each state and territory in Australia has many giant things like there is some sort of unspoken competition going on. In fact, Australia has over 150 giant things and its own Wikipedia page which lists them all.

The Australian Capital Territory (the ACT) doesn't seem to want to compete and has a giant mushroom and a giant pear as well as others that were not note-worthy.

New South Wales is home to the Big Banana, the big bogan, and the big Marino to name a few.

In the Northern Territory, there are many giant artworks that pay homage to Australia's first peoples. NT is also home to the fabulous giant XXXX Beer.

Queensland is home to a giant barrel that is home to the Bundaberg Rum Shop. Queensland is also home to the giant Cassowary, the golden gumboot, the big pineapple, and Matilda the giant kangaroo which is the retired mascot from the 1982 Olympics.

In South Australia, we have the giant ant (Bianca's nightmare), the giant rocking horse, a giant bottle of wine, and one for Sarah - the giant Santa.

Tasmania sort of participates in the silliness of giant things by having the big coffee pot, the big penguin, the big platypus, and the big spud. However, they don't seem to be as invested as the rest of us.

In Western Australia, they missed the brief, and their giant things don't make much sense. They have the giant periodic table, the world's tallest bin, and a big cricket bat.

Finally, in our home state of Victoria, we are home to the big abalone (where Sarah goes to make her sandwiches). The big Seat, big cows, two big koalas, and a giant Sphinx which houses a restaurant Sarah and Bianca went to.

Bianca dug up a few whimsical attractions for y’all

Gnomesville
Lawn gnomes are a classic symbol of kitschy yard decorations, but most people are content to have just one of the little creatures posted up in their yards. Australia’s Gnomesville, a collection of thousands of the weird little statuettes set up on a roundabout is a whole different beast entirely.

The community of silent dwarves actually began as a whimsical protest some 20 years ago. As the Gnomesville website explains, a small bit of land in Ferguson Valley was annexed by the local government to create a roundabout. Despite an outcry from the nearby residents, the roundabout was installed, and tensions simmered. Then at some point, a gnome appeared. At first, there was just one in a tree hollow, but after a few months, there were around 20. The collection continued to grow as visitors and locals alike came and dropped off their own little statues.

In the decades since their first appearance, the army of gnomes had exploded into the thousands. For a time, theft and vandalism stunted the growth of the little population, but today the site is fairly well respected and continues to grow as people bring their own gnomes to add to the community.

There are so many gnomes now in Gnomesville, that in some spots they are even grouped up into little neighborhoods, where gnomes of the same color or attitude are placed together. Visit Gnomesville, but be sure to bring a new resident.

Next was...

Tasmazia and the Village of Lower Crackpot
This self-proclaimed "largest maze complex in the world” is a quirky family attraction in Tasmania’s Promised Land, backdropped by the picturesque Mount Roland. While sometimes classified as a theme park, this description doesn’t quite fit. There are no rides; in fact, there really isn’t anything mechanical or electric at all. Tasmazia is essentially a large maze, with other mazes nestled inside.

Aside from the Great Maze, one of the world’s largest botanical mazes, the mazes include the Hampton Court Maze, the Yellow Brick Road Maze, the Hexagonal Maze, the Cage, the Irish Maze, the Confusion Maze, and the Balance Maze.
One of the main attractions at the park is the eponymous Village of Lower Crackpot, a quaint miniature village built to one-fifth scale. The Embassy Garden is another set of model buildings and icons representing locations around the world, or, in some cases, representing other worlds in the form of the buildings dedicated to intergalactic and time travel.

A quirky, occasionally subversive, sense of humor is present throughout the park. The Village of Lower Crackpot includes the “School of Lateral Thinking” and interplanetary balloon aviation. A monument to whistle-blowers can be found in the Embassy Garden.

Other features of the park include Cubby Town (a cluster of mini-buildings that kids can enter), Lower Crackpot’s Correctional Centre (an assortment of punishments such as faux stocks and a guillotine), and the Three Bears’ Cottage. The park also includes a working lavender farm, which is in full bloom in January.

This location is off the beaten path, even for Tasmania. Consider combining your visit with a visit to Cradle Mountain and Mole Creek's Marakoopa Cave glow worm tour. Sheffield, Tasmania's "Town of Murals" is also nearby and has several restaurant options.

and lastly...

Grandad's Magical Wonderland
There once was a patch of public land in a Newcastle suburb that lay neglected and forgotten. Where others saw overgrown grass and untamed brambles, a man named Merv Moyle saw a wild jungle of exotic flowering trees and mythical creatures hiding in the foliage. A lifelong gardener, Moyle began to transform the neglected patch, planting palms and azaleas and ferns, stringing up garlands of roses, and laying winding stone pathways through his little oasis.

As the garden grew and blossomed, the once dreary space filled with bright colors and extraordinary magic as beautiful fairies and wondrous beasts arrived in droves, making their new homes in the knots of the trees, in the shade of the palm fronds, and under the caps of giant toadstools.

Only a child at heart could summon such fantastical beings, and that is exactly what the late Merv Moyle was. Begun in 1970 as a play area for his daughters, the fairy garden quickly grew into something larger. It became a beloved destination for both the children and adults of Newcastle, a peaceful place to escape from city life and discover all manner of creatures— from gorillas to dragons and, of course, fairies—along its leafy pathways. Over the years, the garden grew to include a pet cemetery, a barbecue pit, several seating areas for tea parties, and a special mailbox for the Fairy Queen herself.

Moyle continued to maintain the garden until his passing in 2018 at the age of 94. Today, Moyle’s daughters and local volunteers continue his work, ensuring that everyone, from the young to the young at heart, can enjoy the garden and its magical inhabitants for many years to come.

Grandad's Magical Wonderland is free to visit and open to the public. Within the garden is the Fairy Queen's mailbox, where visitors can leave the Fairy Queen letters. If you would like to receive a response from the Fairy Queen, please leave a self-addressed stamped envelope in the mailbox.

Round 43 - Interview with Jeff Deskovic
