Round 70 - True Crime Random Tales

This week the girls take aim at True Crime-Random Tales...

Here at Friday Night Wine Fight, we love true crime! Tonight we are going to be discussing some interesting cases which we have randomly selected.

But first, what were we drinking?

Sarah was drinking Pepsi

Available from everywhere

Amy was drinking R Paulazzo Rosé

Available from Naked wines

Bianca was drinking Blindside

Available from Naked wines

Bianca opened the episode with links to a website that she discovered on Tiktok which was vaguely true crime-related.

The website is called Mapping the missing. It is run by a fellow Aussie and here's what the site's creator, Jess, has to say about Mapping the missing;

"The geography of true crime, Australia's missing people, and mysteries using geospatial analysis and remote sensing to help make sense of true crime, cold cases, and the unknown"

If that sounds intriguing to you here's the link...

Then Bianca eagerly got into her segment; The Great Butter Heist (Thank you to our biggest Canadian fan for the topic).

The heist occurred on Christmas day in Trenton Ontario in 2021. The thieves stole approximately 20,000 kilograms of butter worth approximately $200,000.

Bianca then explained that large-scale food theft is not uncommon and that sadly the people who pay the price for the theft is the end consumer.

Sarah was the meat in the sandwich this week and told the tale of the Gruber Family who lived in Germany on a farm in the 1920s.

At Hinterkaifeck farm, strange occurrences began to happen and despite the pleading of the maid Mr Gruber insisted that it was all in the maid's head.

After the maid quits and leaves, Mr Gruber himself starts to notice odd sounds and strange things happening on the property. The family searched the house and the grounds but did not find anyone else on the property.

Sadly, the Gruber family met an untimely end at the hands of an unknown assailant. The Hinterkaifeck murders are still unsolved and have plagued investigators for years.

Amy finished us off with the tragic tale of Susan Cox Powell. Susan went missing from her family home in December 2009. Her in-laws raised the alarm when they could not locate Susan or Josh (Susan's husband) or the couple's two children.

What was unearthed during the search for Susan will stun even the most avid true crime fan. Not only was Susan's husband controlling and her marriage was not in a good place, she recently made her family relocate to another state in order to escape her father-in-law (Josh's father) who was stalking her.

As the investigation continues, more bizarre facts are uncovered leading the police and many family members to believe that Josh and possibly members of his family had something to do with Susan's disappearance.

Sadly further tragedy struck the family in an act which you will have to hear to believe (listen to the podcast to hear what happened).

Amy highly recommends the documentary about the case called The Disappearance of Susan Cox Powell.

Round 43 - Interview with Jeff Deskovic

This week the girls take aim at the incredible story of Mr Jeffrey Deskovic...

But first, what were we drinking?

At the time we were doing the interview it was 4am our time so forgive us, we did not have our standard beverages in hand.

Bianca was drinking coffee but it could have been wine

In this very special episode of Friday Night Wine Fight Amy and Bianca interviewed Mr. Jeffrey Deskovic, a man who was wrongly convicted of a brutal rape and murder of a 15-year-old classmate.

Jeff was convicted of this horrendous crime when he was only 17 years old in 1990. Here are some pictures kindly supplied by Jeff of his sentencing and time in prison.

After 16 years behind bars, Jeff managed to have his conviction overturned with the help of some dedicated supporters. After leaving prison Jeff struggled to re-integrate back into society and searched for a way to help others.

Jeff completed his law degree and started the Deskovic Foundation to help those wrongly incarcerated.

We were so very honored to speak to Jeff and hear about his incredible journey so far.

You can find out more about how you can support Jeff's work by visiting his foundation's webpage at the
Deskovic Foundation.

Jeff also helped bring to life a card game that aims to help those who have been incarcerated talk to people closest to them about what they are going through after their release. Please check out the Beyond the Bars Recharge game at Recharge the Game

Jeff's story will astound you and will leave you thinking "it could have happened to me..."

Round 38 - World's Dumbest Criminals

This week the girls take aim at Worlds Dumbest Criminals...

What's not to love about a story about someone trying to commit a crime and being foiled by their own stupidity? Nothing we say! So sit back and listen to a few tales of stupidity at its finest!

But first, what were we drinking?

Amy was drinking Jen Pfeiffer The Rebel Merlot and for dessert, she had a can of Zeffer Cider Co Apple Crumble Cider.

Available from Naked wines and Dan Murphy's

Bianca was drinking smooth operator cabernet merlot.

Available from BWS

Sarah was drinking Elysian Springs Syrah

Amy introduced this week's topic by discussing a few quick tales from Australia and Croatia before moving on to her main tale for the evening.

The subject of Amy's main story was a man who thought it would be a good idea to leave his phone number with the people at the shop he proposed to rob so they could call him when the manager returned to open the safe.

Sarah tells the tale of an attempted robbery of a liquor store by a man who had his eye on more than just the merchandise. She also told the tale of a man trying to impersonate a police officer using a restaurant gift card as his ID.

Bianca finished off this week's episode with the twisted story of a jealous son (Dorsey Sanders) whose life takes an unexpected turn. The story spans 3 countries (USA, Rarotonga, & New Zealand) and is stupidity at its finest!
