Round 54 - Better than the original

This week the girls take aim at things that are better than the original...

This week we are taking aim at the world of remakes. Movies, music, TV are all formats that have seen a multitude of remakes. Every now and then you stumble across a remake that is better than the original and tonight we are taking aim at a few....

But first, what were we drinking?

Amy was drinking R Paulazzo Cabernet Savignon

Available from Naked wines

Sarah was drinking Brown Brothers Moscato Rosรจ

Available from Dan Murphys

Bianca was drinking brown brown Moscato and sav which she was driving out of her comically large secret life of pets cup!

Available from Liquorland

Amy introduced this week's topic by running through a brief history of remade music and movies. Amy then discussed some fun facts about the most remade movies and some epic flops of remade movies.

For something different and because she had to leave midway through recording the episode we let Sarah go first this week.

Sarah chose a couple of songs that she preferred the remake of instead of the originals. These songs included:

Respect by Aretha Franklin
Nothing Compares 2U By Sinead O'Conner
Killing Me Softly by The Fugees; and
The Sound Of Silence By Disturbed

If you like any of these songs please let us know or if you haven't listened to them, give them a listen. Sarah finished her part off with a movie. Sarah declared her love for the movie Titanic made in 1997 and stated in her opinion that this remake was better than the original and other adaptations of the story. Sarah mainly credits the success of this remake to Leonardo Di Caprio. Face it, you cannot beat Di Caprio.

Amy jumped back in at this point in the show to discuss a movie that she believed was better than the original. Amy's pick was the Stepford wives. The original was made in 1975 then remade in 2004.

Amy liked the remake better because she thought that the point the movie was trying to make about equality between the genders was better made in the remake. However, Amy accepts that many people (including Bianca) completely disagree with her and she doesn't care.

2004

1975

Bianca discussed the finer points between the Freaky Friday movies starting way back in the 70s, then to the first remake in the 90s. Coming in next is the 2000s version and bringing up the rear is the 2018 crapulence.

Bianca definitely had a hard time choosing between the 90s and 2000s versions but decided the 90s was her fav and the best remake.

As promised here is Sandra Bernhards best look she has given anyone in any movie ever! The contempt is amazing!

Round 41 - 90's Fashion

This week the girls take aim at 90s fashion...

The 90s is by far the girl's favorite decade tonight they took a look at some iconic 90s fashion trends which they loved, like so hard.

But first, what were we drinking?

Amy was drinking the Mechanic Cabernet Sauvignon

Available from Naked wines

Bianca was drinking Brown Brothers Cienna

Available from Dan Murphy's

Sarah was drinking Tread Softly - Rose

Available from Dan Murphy's

Amy kicked off this week's topic by chatting about some iconic 90s fashion trends. She then discussed one of the most famous fashion trends of the 90s being the grunge look.

As promised, here are some pictures of a fashion icon of the 90s  - Friday Night Wine Fight's very own Sarah

Also here are Amy's Doc Martins, oh the places they have been...

Bianca discussed how in the early nineties, Indian-American club-goers introduced disco-bhangra (Punjabi folk music) and Indian fashion (bindis, brocade, nose rings) to the clubbing scene in the UK and North America. Despite earlier lukewarm attempts by the 60s counterculture movements and the hippie-trails across India and Nepal to inject textiles and bindi into the mainstream, this was Indian fashion's first big international moment.

It was a matter of time before Gwen Stefani—who was dating her No Doubt bandmate Tony Kanal, who was London-born, of Indian origin, and flirting with Hinduism at the time—adapted the bindi as her "look." Both Kanal and Stefani appeared in massively hit music videos for "Just A Girl" and "Frozen" in bindis, subsequently taking it to the stage, red carpets, and award shows.

Crushed velvet was the shit! Fricken loved it!

Bianca and her sister had matching dresses as was the style at the time. Hers was dark blue and Dani's was baby pink.

(could not find a pic in time for episode release)

Bianca's favorite though was her floor-length velvet skirt.

1993

1997

Sarah ends with some of her favorite fashions of the 90s. These looks include the iconic look of the checked skirt and matching blazer as well as a style that Sarah hasn't given up on since to 90s, oversized clothing. Although, she has limited herself to only wearing oversized jumpers and t-shirts.

Round 36 - Would You Rather?

This week the girls take aim at the classic game, would you rather...

Would you rather, the classic game that can polarise the closest of friends and uncover many interesting things you didn't know about someone. All this from asking if you would rather eat a spider or drink rotten milk. Let's see where the girls go with this.......

But first, what were we drinking?

Bianca was drinking the Hare and the Tortoise Pinot Gris

Available from Liquorland

Sarah was drinking Brown Brothers Dolcetto & Syrah

Available from Dan Murphys

Amy was drinking Coraggioso Nero D'Avola

Available from Aldi

Bianca opened this episode with the backstory of the popular game Would You Rather?.

Then got into her questions (Here's a sneak preview):

  • Would you rather have the ability to fly like an eagle or swim like a whale?
  • Would you rather win the lottery and never have to work again or have your dream job and work until you’re 80?
  • Would you rather eat a spider or drink rotten milk?
  • Would you rather fight 1000 duck-sized horses OR 1 horse-sized duck?
  • Would you rather be covered in fur OR covered in scales?
  • Would you rather be forced to sing to any song you heard OR forced to dance every time you heard music?
Amy sucks at this game! She asks way too many questions and wants to know logical things like "why are we there?" in order to formulate her answers. However, she did manage to find three would you rather questions which, despite her plot twist in one question, even she enjoyed discussing and answering. Amy's would you rather questions were:

  • First-class ticket round the world or never pay for food at a restaurant?
  • Wake up as a new random person every year and have full control of them for the whole year or once a week spend a day inside a stranger without having any control of them?
  • Use either a fork or spoon (not both) forever?
Sarah brought her absolute A-game this week and pulled out these questions for our lightning round:

  • Would you rather be Batman or Spiderman?
  • Would you rather explore space or the ocean?
  • Would you rather be stuck on an island alone or with someone who talks incessantly?
  • Would you rather be an Olympic gold medallist or Nobel peace prize winner?
  • Would you rather speak fluent in all languages or be a master of every musical instrument?
  • Would you rather be known as a one-hit-wonder for a novel or a song?
  • Would you rather sing like an opera star or cook like a gourmet chef?
  • Would you rather eat a bug or be stung by a jellyfish?
  • Would you rather live in a treehouse or under the ground?
  • Would you rather not have electricity or have no indoor plumbing?

Thank you for listening and we hope you enjoyed the show!

Round 13 - 90s movies part 1

This week the girls chat about some of their favourite 90s movies, genres, and soundtracks that accompanied these movies.

Honestly, if you could find three more basic 90s bitches we would be very surprised. The girls love everything 90s and chat about some of the movies that they love. This will be part one of a probably never-ending series of parts where the girls chat about 90s movies.

But first, what were we drinking?

Bianca was drinking Toresella Pinot Grigio

Available from BWS

Sarah was drinking Somersby blackcurrant  cider

Available from Dan Murphys

Amy was drinking Grounded Cru Pinot Gris

Available from Naked Wines

Sarah opened with some teen 90s movies she loved being Now & Then, one of our all-time favourites, and then moved onto one of the most popular teen movies of the time, She's all that. She then ended her segment with the cult teen flick Cry-baby, one of the best movies of all time.

Bianca then chatted about the Empire Records soundtrack of which she has in her car because she is a basic 90's bitch and still uses CDs.

The official soundtrack: "Til I Hear It from You" by Gin Blossoms "Liar" by The Cranberries "A Girl Like You" by Edwyn Collins "Free" by The Martinis "Crazy Life" by Toad the Wet Sprocket "Bright As Yellow" by The Innocence Mission "Circle of Friends" by Better Than Ezra "I Don't Want to Live Today" by Ape Hangers "Whole Lotta Trouble" by Cracker "Ready, Steady, Go" by The Meices "What You Are" by Drill "Nice Overalls" by Lustre "Here It Comes Again" by Please "The Ballad of El Goodo" by Evan Dando "Sugarhigh" by Coyote Shivers "The Honeymoon Is Over" by The Cruel Sea (Australian and German edition) Some other notable songs are: "Hey Joe" by Dirt Clods "Little Bastard" by Ass Ponys (as Ass Ponies) "If You Want Blood (You've Got It)" by AC/DC "Counting Blue Cars" by Dishwalla "How" by The Cranberries "Saddam A Go-Go" by Gwar "This Is the Day" by The The "Say No More (Mon Amour)" by Maxwell Caulfield as Rex Manning (written for the film) "Infinity" by Mouth Music "Money (That's What I Want)" by Flying Lizards "Sugar High (ft. Robin Tunney as Debra Renee Zellweger as Gina Liv Tyler as Corey Mason Coyote Shivers as Berko Brendan Sexton as Warren Maxwell Caulfield as Rex Manning Debi Mazar as Jane James 'Kimo' Wills as Eddie Ben Bode as Mitchell Beck

The second film Bianca discussed was Hercules Returns.

Hercules returns - opens with a birds-eye view of Melbourne and pans over the iconic Flinders Street station.

Film buff Brad McBain (Argue), a frustrated employee of Australia's largest cinema chain, The Kent Corporation, quits his job and decides to set up and re-open the Picture Palace, a palatial disused cinema in St Kilda, Melbourne, to show classic old films in the old-fashioned style.

As a gimmick, he chooses the last picture that the cinema featured, Samson and His Mighty Challenge (an Italian film, originally released in 1964 as Ercole, Sansone, Maciste e Ursus: Gil invincibili). When the print arrives at the grand gala opening they discover that it is in unsubtitled Italian, and Brad suspects that his old boss, Sir Michael Kent (Carman), has in some way sabotaged the delivery so that McBain can fail at his achievement and keep Kent's business running successfully.

This calls for desperate measures and McBain, his projectionist Sprocket (Spence), and his publicist Lisa (Coustas) are forced to improvise voice-overs for the entire film with hilarious results. Kent (Carman) also attends the screening, hoping to see it fail. As he realizes that the crowd is enjoying the film, he storms up to the projection box. He and McBain fight just as the film reaches its climax; McBain breaks the fourth wall several times so that the fight in the projection box corresponds with the fight on the screen. Kent is knocked out, and the film is a huge success.

Amy finished off with a discussion about action movies and the actors who were redefined as action hero's after they featured in some action movies made in the 90s.

Amy also chatted about the prevalence of comedy in 90s action movies and some of the movies which better fit into the genre of action-comedy.

Round 43 - Interview with Jeff Deskovic
