Round 40 - English Words, Like Why?

This week the girls take aim at English words...

Ever noticed that the English language is just utterly bizarre? We have. Join us on a journey in which we discuss a select choice of English words and ask the age-old question - "but why?"

But first, what were we drinking?

Sarah was still drinking  Brown Brothers Moscato & Sav

Available from Dan Murphys

Amy was drinking the Mechanic Cabernet Sauvignon

Available from Naked wines

Bianca was drinking Hendrick's Midsummer Solstice Gin

Available from BWS

Sarah has no idea why she was opening this topic as she doesn't do the words very well. However here she is introducing this week's topic and giving us some examples of why English words are confusing. She then goes into some word meanings that you may or may not have known about words like, Chad, winebibber, and petcock.

Bianca had two super fun words this episode

The first was Bathroom; According to folk etymology, We don't get the word bathroom from the word Bathtub.

Let me explain folk etymology first; The technical term "folk etymology" refers to a change in the form of a word caused by erroneous popular suppositions about its etymology. Until academic linguists developed comparative philology (now "comparative linguistics") and described the laws underlying sound changes, the derivation of a word was mostly guesswork. Speculation about the original form of words, in turn, feeds back into the development of the word and thus becomes a part of a new etymology.

Believing a word to have a certain origin, people begin to pronounce, spell, or otherwise use the word in a manner appropriate to that perceived origin. This popular etymologizing has had a powerful influence on the forms which words take. Examples in English include crayfish or crawfish, which are not historically related to fish but come from Middle English crevice, cognate with French écrevisse. Likewise, the chaise lounge, from the original French chaise longue ("long chair"), has come to be associated with the word lounge.

Anyway back to Bathroom; We get this word from a person named Elizabeth Bathory, who's the most prolific female Serial Killer in history. She's the origin of the stories of bathing in the blood of virgins to stay young. Anyway, before it was “bathroom”, it was originally called Bathory Room. There is a phenomenon in linguistics called elision where similar syllables get smushed together over time, so Bathory room becomes "bathroom" and it's named that because that is where she would kill and bathe in the blood.

The second was Fornication; In Roman times, there was a god named “Fornax.” Fornax was the god of baking and bread, and her name stemmed from the word “fornacis,” which described the furnace used to bake.

It turns out that prostitutes would often reside in bakeries during the days of the Roman empire, and they would frequently approach clients in a not-so-subtle way by offering them some penis-shaped bread, called “coliphia.”

After eating the bread, the clients would then go have sex with the prostitutes in the now-cooled-down furnaces. This led to an association between the word for Furnace, the goddess, and sex, and as a result, the word “fornication” emerged.

Amy started researching some words that have always confused her then stumbled across a group of words that puzzled her even more. Ever wondered why there are so many words in the English language that start with KN but we only say the N part?

Turns during the 1500s there was a major change to English spelling because printing presses were in the hands of common people and not just government scribes. When you couldn't work out how to spell something but you needed to print it you just made it up. By the time people worked out what was going on no one cared and had moved on with the new bastardized version of the word.

Amy decided since this is how she approaches spelling (and everything else) we should adopt this. Lady Mondegreen's message tonight was "say it loud, say it wrong, and spell it however you like!"

Round 39 - My Favorite Book or Book Series

This week the girls take aim at my favourite book/book series...

Deep under their somewhat unintelligent, mildly alcoholic facades, the girls are big nerds who love books. Tonight they discuss their favourite book and/ or book series.

But first, what were we drinking?

Bianca was drinking The Chronicles Cabernet Sauvignon

Available from BWS

The Vinoair Bianca was banging on about is available in many places like; Dan Murphys, Temple & Webster, and Amazon. Just to name a few places. Get one people, to save you washing decanters!!!

Sarah was drinking Brown Brothers Moscato & Sav

Available from Dan Murphys

Amy was drinking Puttin' on Lou - Ritz Pinot Gris

Available from Naked wines

Bianca started off with a brief history of books and called out old mate Cassius Dio (again) and to be fair it was current events. Then Bianca moved on to some fun facts or tidbits as she was calling them.

The world’s smallest book is NOT the little book of calm! Who knew? Anyway, it's actually called; Teeny Ted from Turnip Town. It is verified by The Guinness Book of Records.  The book is in production and measures 100 micrometres by 70 micrometres.

Remember folks! If you see someone reading and they are moving their lips they are doing an amazing job, literally 110% per cent.

Then Bianca got into her book series and in true trashbag style, she chooses to discuss Jilly Coopers Rutshire Chronicles, specifically Riders, Rivals, & Polo.

Amy was not ok trying to pick a single book or series of books for this week's topic. After much internal debate (otherwise known as she drank dinner) she decided to discuss a crime fiction series that was set in her old hometown.

The Hal Challis detective series by Garry Disher is amazing and will thrill readers especially if you are from the Mornington Peninsula.

A full list of  books that make up the series can be found at Gary Disher's website

Sarah after tossing up a couple of book series, decided on Vampire Academy. This series, which she has read a couple of times, is about a young girl who is half-human half-vampire who is training to be her vampire best friend's guardian and falling for her instructor.

Round 38 - World's Dumbest Criminals

This week the girls take aim at Worlds Dumbest Criminals...

What's not to love about a story about someone trying to commit a crime and being foiled by their own stupidity? Nothing we say! So sit back and listen to a few tales of stupidity at its finest!

But first, what were we drinking?

Amy was drinking Jen Pfeiffer The Rebel Merlot and for dessert, she had a can of Zeffer Cider Co Apple Crumble Cider.

Available from Naked wines and Dan Murphy's

Bianca was drinking smooth operator cabernet merlot.

Available from BWS

Sarah was drinking Elysian Springs Syrah

Amy introduced this week's topic by discussing a few quick tales from Australia and Croatia before moving on to her main tale for the evening.

The subject of Amy's main story was a man who thought it would be a good idea to leave his phone number with the people at the shop he proposed to rob so they could call him when the manager returned to open the safe.

Sarah tells the tale of an attempted robbery of a liquor store by a man who had his eye on more than just the merchandise. She also told the tale of a man trying to impersonate a police officer using a restaurant gift card as his ID.

Bianca finished off this week's episode with the twisted story of a jealous son (Dorsey Sanders) whose life takes an unexpected turn. The story spans 3 countries (USA, Rarotonga, & New Zealand) and is stupidity at its finest!

Round 37 - Mythical Creatures

This week the girls take aim at Mythical Creatures...

Mythical creatures are the most fascinating of beasts! Often discussed in popular culture as well as well-known tales throughout the ages, mythical creatures are most interesting as they often possess similar features to creatures that exist among us. This week the girls take a look at some mythical creatures and their most interesting features and history.

But first, what were we drinking?

Sarah was drinking Cass Beer

Available from Dan Murphy's

Amy was drinking Coraggioso Nero D'Avola

Available from Aldi

Bianca was drinking

Available from Liquorland

Sarah opens with the night's topic and gives a couple of examples of what a mythical creature is. Examples are the Bunyip and the Manticore. She then jumps into her segment of the Satyr, mythical creatures from Greek Mythology who are often mistaken for fauns.

Mt Tumnus

Amy with her very limited knowledge of anything remotely fantasy-based picked a mythical creature called a Harpy. Harpies hail from Greek Mythology and have the body of a bird and the face of a woman. While the Harpy has changed over time one fact remains, they are bad-asses and have fun torturing humans.

Bianca covered the super cute little being. The Jackalope.

We discovered this animal is mostly found in North America and has been up for Wyoming's state animal several times... Seriously Wyoming, just accept the Jackalope already!

We also learned that the Jackalope can mimic human voices and is very ferocious. There are also places in Douglas Wyoming where you can buy Jackalope milk! although the New York Times questions its authenticity on grounds that milking a jackalope is known to be fraught with risk.

German Wolpertinger (1507) Variant regional spellings of the name include Wolperdinger, Woipertingers, and Volpertinger. They are part of a larger family of horned mammals that exist throughout the Germanic regions of Europe, such as the Austrian Raurackl, which is nearly identical to the German Wolpertinger.

In this episode, we also properly discussed our leathery-feathered friend the Lizard Duck.

Here are some of our fun facts about the beastie:
  • Measures about 2 feet in height at full adult development, don't worry no horse-sized lizard ducks to fight and weight averages about 10kg at full growth too.

  • Can fly at heights of 30.8km or 100,000 feet for those playing at home and have been known to damage rockets much like a wombat or deer does to a car.

  • They are intersex animals having a male species a female species and a Shim. Now, the shim is the most feared of the species, one murdered Sarah's parents, that's why we call her Batman.

  • Like its distant relative the Duck, the Lizard Duck has multiple eyelids but when it blinks a certain way it can see infrared, like the predator.

  • It eats both lizard and duck food but has been known to hunt and consume medium-sized mammals.

  • It has a claw on each foot that can administer paralyzing venom.

  • When threatened it can shoot a stream of acid-like feces up to 100 ft at the speed of a bullet (around 2736 Kilometers/hour or 1700 miles/hour).

  • They can change color depending on their mood.

  • They tend to migrate north in winter but only if the first day of winter falls on a Tuesday.

Round 36 - Would You Rather?

This week the girls take aim at the classic game, would you rather...

Would you rather, the classic game that can polarise the closest of friends and uncover many interesting things you didn't know about someone. All this from asking if you would rather eat a spider or drink rotten milk. Let's see where the girls go with this.......

But first, what were we drinking?

Bianca was drinking the Hare and the Tortoise Pinot Gris

Available from Liquorland

Sarah was drinking Brown Brothers Dolcetto & Syrah

Available from Dan Murphys

Amy was drinking Coraggioso Nero D'Avola

Available from Aldi

Bianca opened this episode with the backstory of the popular game Would You Rather?.

Then got into her questions (Here's a sneak preview):

  • Would you rather have the ability to fly like an eagle or swim like a whale?
  • Would you rather win the lottery and never have to work again or have your dream job and work until you’re 80?
  • Would you rather eat a spider or drink rotten milk?
  • Would you rather fight 1000 duck-sized horses OR 1 horse-sized duck?
  • Would you rather be covered in fur OR covered in scales?
  • Would you rather be forced to sing to any song you heard OR forced to dance every time you heard music?
Amy sucks at this game! She asks way too many questions and wants to know logical things like "why are we there?" in order to formulate her answers. However, she did manage to find three would you rather questions which, despite her plot twist in one question, even she enjoyed discussing and answering. Amy's would you rather questions were:

  • First-class ticket round the world or never pay for food at a restaurant?
  • Wake up as a new random person every year and have full control of them for the whole year or once a week spend a day inside a stranger without having any control of them?
  • Use either a fork or spoon (not both) forever?
Sarah brought her absolute A-game this week and pulled out these questions for our lightning round:

  • Would you rather be Batman or Spiderman?
  • Would you rather explore space or the ocean?
  • Would you rather be stuck on an island alone or with someone who talks incessantly?
  • Would you rather be an Olympic gold medallist or Nobel peace prize winner?
  • Would you rather speak fluent in all languages or be a master of every musical instrument?
  • Would you rather be known as a one-hit-wonder for a novel or a song?
  • Would you rather sing like an opera star or cook like a gourmet chef?
  • Would you rather eat a bug or be stung by a jellyfish?
  • Would you rather live in a treehouse or under the ground?
  • Would you rather not have electricity or have no indoor plumbing?

Thank you for listening and we hope you enjoyed the show!

Round 34 - Underrated Movies

This week the girls take aim at underrated movies...

For every movie's success and failure, there is a movie that goes under the radar. Some people's underrated movies are polarising so have a listen to which three movies the girls decided should have the title of underrated classic.....

But first, what were we drinking?

Sarah was drinking Summersby Blackberry Cider

Available from Dan Murphy's

Amy was drinking Feet on the ground Pinot Grigio

Available from Naked wines

Bianca was drinking Hendrick's Midsummer Solstice Gin

Available from Dan Murphys

Sarah opens with the night's topic of Underrated Movies which are movies that you may love but others just don't feel the same. She then moved onto on of her favorite movies, Meet the Robinsons. It's a beautifully done Disney movie that didn't get the recognition it deserved.

Amy's movie choice tonight was the epic slightly comic book-esk tale of Scott Pilgrim vs the world.

To say this movie tanked at the box office would be an understatement. However, it has since gained a cult following and has even racked up a few awards. In summary, this movie is about a 20 something guy who has decided to pursue a new romantic interest (even though he has a girlfriend at the time) and finds out he has to defeat her 7 evil ex's in order to date her.

The movie also has a musical undertone as our hero, Scott Pilgrim, plays in a fairly average garage band.

If you have not seen this movie do it now!

Bianca's movie tonight is The Adventures of Ford Fairlane Rock and Roll Detective.

Here's a brief synopsis as this movie is too good to give too much away. Like seriously fuck all the haters on every review site ever.

To the Los Angeles elite, Ford Fairlane is known as "Mr. Rock 'n' Roll Detective." This loudmouthed ladies' man serves an exclusive rock star clientele, who depend on his keen eye and smug discretion. So when a heavy-metal musician dies mid-concert, Fairlane is on the case before the lights come up. But things turn shocking when radio personality Johnny Crunch hires Fairlane to find a missing groupie mere hours before he is electrocuted live on air.

The cast is amazing!

Andrew Dice Clay as Ford Fairlane

Wayne Newton as Julian Grendel

Priscilla Presley as Colleen Sutton

Lauren Holly as Jazz (fords assistant)

Brandon Call as The Kid

Maddie Corman as Zuzu Petals

David Patrick Kelly as Sam the Sleaze Bag

Morris Day as Don Cleveland

Robert Englund as Smiley

Ed O'Neill as Lt. Amos (or as Ford calls him Lt Anus)

Gilbert Gottfried as Johnny Crunch

Vince Neil as Bobby Black

William Shockley and M. Russell Zulke as Punk Gunslingers

Steve White as Detective Benny

Kari Wuhrer as Melodi

Cody Jarrett as Kyle Troy

Sheila E. as Club Singer

Lala as Sorority Girl

Delia Sheppard as Josie

Tone-Loc as Slam

Kurt Loder as Himself

But the real reason this movie is so fucking good is all the one-liners, so here's some of the best:

Ford Fairlane:

I could've been a rock singer if only I hadn't been banned from MTV. Long story. But anyway, I only know that one song. Well, I do a mean "Puff the Magic Dragon," but only in the nude. Longer story.

Don Cleveland:

You got to shave before you leave the house in a dress like that... and I don't mean your legs.

Ford Fairlane:

Have a twinkie, snapperhead.

Lt. Amos:

Are you calling me an asshole, asshole?

Ford Fairlane:

No, I'm calling you an anus, anus.

Lt. Amos:

Two words. "Disco Express."

Ford Fairlane:

Disco Express? They blew dog. And that lead singer, he kinda looked like...

Lt. Amos:

Like ME, right?

Ford Fairlane:

Yeah. I was gonna say he looked like shit, but... he looked like you.

Ford Fairlane:

Hey, great pipes, huh? I've heard cats f*** with more harmony.

Ford Fairlane:

What are your names, Neil and Bob, or is that like what you do?

Ford Fairlane:

You're 10 seconds away from the most embarrassing moment in your life.

Ford Fairlane:

So many assholes... So few bullets...

Ford Fairlane:

Clint Eastwood... I f***ed 'im.

Ford Fairlane:

Conversation with Zuzu Petals was like masturbating with a cheese grater: slightly amusing, but mostly painful.

Ford Fairlane:

Here's to you, Johnny. Sucking my dick.

Johnny Crunch:

Suzuki Samurai, you Bensonhurst piece of shit.

Ford Fairlane:

I coulda been a fisherman. Fishermen, they get up, they fish, they sell fish, they smell fish. Reminds me of this girl I used to go with, Yvonne, she smelled like fish.

Ford Fairlane:

What... you didn't really think we'd kill the f***in' koala bear, now did ya?

Ford Fairlane:

I'm so terrific I have my own toll-free number: 1-800-UNBELIEVABLE.

AND ONE BIANCA SAYS PROBS WAY TOO OFTEN...

Ford Fairlane:

Un-fucking-believable.

Round 43 - Interview with Jeff Deskovic
